EMDR: A Transformative Therapy for Trauma

Francine Shapiro, the Visionary Behind EMDR

A Pioneer in Mental Health

Francine Shapiro PhD (1948-2019) was an esteemed psychologist and educator who made a profound impact on the field of mental health. Her pioneering work led to the development of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a groundbreaking therapy that has revolutionized the treatment of trauma.

From Origin to Evolution

In 1987, Shapiro noticed a correlation between eye movements and the reduction of intrusive thoughts and emotions associated with traumatic experiences. She coined the term "Eye Movement Desensitization" to describe this phenomenon. Over time, as her research progressed, she recognized the importance of cognitive processes in the healing journey. In 1991, she renamed the therapy EMDR to reflect its comprehensive approach that addressed both eye movements and cognitive reprocessing.

Scientific Validation

EMDR has undergone extensive research, establishing its efficacy as a highly effective treatment for a wide range of trauma-related disorders. It is now widely recommended by leading mental health organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization.
