Solar Flares Trigger Geomagnetic Storm on Earth

Auroras Expected as Sun Unleashes Powerful Energy

May 10, 2024 | Updated 7:27 pm

A dramatic blast from the sun set off a geomagnetic storm in Earth's atmosphere on Friday that is expected to create dazzling auroras in the northern and southern polar regions.

The dual-flare spectacle came from sunspot region AR3663. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured imagery of the solar flares as bright flashes on the upper center of the sun.

The flare has triggered a severe geomagnetic storm watch for Earth, with potential disruptions to power grids, satellites, and communications systems.

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to create dazzling auroras that may be visible as far south as the northern United States and as far north as the southern tip of South America.

Scientists are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
